Молекула РНК, состоящая из двух комплементарных цепей, - например, дсРНК образует геном некоторых РНК-содержащих вирусов, может возникать при взаимодействии смысловых и антисмысловых РНК antisense RNA, а также является элементом вторичной структуры некоторых клеточных РНК (например, тРНК); кроме того, дсРНК известны среди гетерогенных ядерных РНК - дсРНК-А (длинные - 300-800 пар оснований) и дсРНК-В (короткие - 100-200, представляют собой палиндромы palindrome)
